English Linguistics->Phonetics->In-depth study English Linguistics->General Studies of Linguistics->In-depth Study English Linguistics->Phonetics->Journal
This is a unique website of George Mason University that archives a large set of English speech accents from a variety of language backgrounds. Both native and non-native speakers of English from many different regions read the same English paragraph, and their productions are carefully recorded. This site is frequently updated; currently 740 samples are archived.
For each sample, the website provides the speaker's demographic information, a phonetic transcription of the sample, a set of the speaker's phonological generalizations, a link to a map showing the speaker's place of birth, and a link to the Ethnologue language database. Users may listen to the sample. Thus, this website allows users to compare the demographic and linguistic backgrounds of the speakers and to investigate their accents effectively. In addition, users may post their own recordings.
This site is constructed as a teaching tool and as a research tool. Phoneticians and phonologists who do research on speech accent and who do phonetic transcriptions will particularly find this website useful. Moreover, ESL teachers and students will also find it useful.

English Linguistics->General Studies of Linguistics->In-depth Study
The electronic version of Ethnologue: Languages of the World presents the data used to prepare printed volumes, along with links to the SIL Bibliography and the International Academic Bookstore. The purpose of this website is to provide a comprehensive listing of the known living languages of the world.
The Ethonologue was founded by Richard S. Pittman, who was motivated by the desire to share information on language development needs around the world with his colleagues in SIL International as well as with other language researchers. As knowledge of the world¡¯s languages increases, so does the number of identified languages. Complete information on all of the world¡¯s languages is not available since languages are dynamic and undergo constant change. However, this edition of the Ethnologue reflects an increase of 103 previously unidentified languages which had been considered dialects of another language. Information at the Ethnologue comes from numerous sources and is confirmed by consultation of both reliable published sources and of a network of field correspondents. The visitors will have access to a full listing of the known living languages of the world.
The website suggests that the information given here can be useful to linguists, translators, anthropologists, bilingual educators, government officials, aid workers, potential field investigators, missionaries, students, and others with language interests.
