Society for Germanic Linguistics

English Linguistics->History of Linguistics->School or Organization

The Society for Germanic Linguistics (SGL), founded in 1968, is the largest and most active organization in North America to serve the broad community of scholars teaching and researching in Germanic linguistics and philology. The international membership of the SGL embraces all areas of and approaches to Germanic linguistics and philology, from formal syntax and phonology through historical linguistics to textual editing. The Society represents scholars investigating languages such as Modern German, Dutch, Yiddish, the Scandinavian languages, Afrikaans, Pennsylvania German, English before 1500, and Gothic, as well as texts and manuscripts in these languages. The Society publishes the Journal of Germanic Linguistics (JGL), which, starting in 2001, will appear quarterly. The international Germanic Linguistics Annual Conference (GLAC) is held each spring under the auspices of the Society.

Because SGL is the only society which focuses on Germanic linguistics in the North America, this site offers a lot of information about Germanic linguistics.

However, most resources are papers and theses. Therefore, there are no explanations for basic terms or theories. In other words, this homepage is good for advanced students studying linguistics.

Kristina Pfaff's Linguistic Funland

English Linguistics->Korean Linguistics->Journal

The Linguistic Funland was created in 1994 as a list of various linguistics links on a personal homepage. Then a graduate student in linguistics, the author began to accumulate a list of resources that soon grew out of a single page and into this directory. On this site, you'll find resources for language teaching and learning (related to TESL, ESL, and TESOL), linguistics study, and other miscellaneous resources. It even provides scripts for educators and electronic journals. The author of this site, Kristina Pfaff, has a Bachelor of Science in applied science and technology and a Master's degree in linguistics. After working at the University of Nevada and the University of Minnesota, she now works as a CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programmer and systems administrator.

Because she has experience teaching Korean college-level students, there is precious information about teaching English for Korean students in this site. Also, the site provides a lot of link sites related to TESOL. You can get not only teaching skills but also information for related job opportunities.

However, this site lacks in-depth studies or important theses. Therefore, it will be useful for beginners who have interests in linguistics and English education in general.

Language Acquisition: A Journal of Developmental Linguistics is an online content delivery service. The researches published in this journal makes a clear contribution to linguistic theories by increasing our understanding of how language is acquired. The journal focuses on the acquisition of syntax, semantics, phonology, and morphology, and considers theoretical, experimental, and computational perspectives.
Preference is given to papers which make a substantial theoretical contribution, irrespective of the particular theoretical framework employed, but the submission of papers presenting new empirical data of general theoretical interest is also encouraged. The journal carries research articles, as well as book reviews and shorter pieces on topics of current controversy. It may be downloaded and printed for personal reference.

This site is well organized for users. There are general instructions (format, headings, typeface, style for linguistic notations, citations, example sentences, footnotes, and acknowledgements) for users who want to subscribe to the journal. There are three ways to access it; online and print, online only, and print only. Users can freely choose the way to read the papers.
