English Linguistics->History of Linguistics->School or Organization

The Society for Germanic Linguistics (SGL), founded in 1968, is the largest and most active organization in North America to serve the broad community of scholars teaching and researching in Germanic linguistics and philology. The international membership of the SGL embraces all areas of and approaches to Germanic linguistics and philology, from formal syntax and phonology through historical linguistics to textual editing. The Society represents scholars investigating languages such as Modern German, Dutch, Yiddish, the Scandinavian languages, Afrikaans, Pennsylvania German, English before 1500, and Gothic, as well as texts and manuscripts in these languages. The Society publishes the Journal of Germanic Linguistics (JGL), which, starting in 2001, will appear quarterly. The international Germanic Linguistics Annual Conference (GLAC) is held each spring under the auspices of the Society.

Because SGL is the only society which focuses on Germanic linguistics in the North America, this site offers a lot of information about Germanic linguistics.

However, most resources are papers and theses. Therefore, there are no explanations for basic terms or theories. In other words, this homepage is good for advanced students studying linguistics.

Language Acquisition: A Journal of Developmental Linguistics is an online content delivery service. The researches published in this journal makes a clear contribution to linguistic theories by increasing our understanding of how language is acquired. The journal focuses on the acquisition of syntax, semantics, phonology, and morphology, and considers theoretical, experimental, and computational perspectives.
Preference is given to papers which make a substantial theoretical contribution, irrespective of the particular theoretical framework employed, but the submission of papers presenting new empirical data of general theoretical interest is also encouraged. The journal carries research articles, as well as book reviews and shorter pieces on topics of current controversy. It may be downloaded and printed for personal reference.

This site is well organized for users. There are general instructions (format, headings, typeface, style for linguistic notations, citations, example sentences, footnotes, and acknowledgements) for users who want to subscribe to the journal. There are three ways to access it; online and print, online only, and print only. Users can freely choose the way to read the papers.

The Mouton Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology

English Linguistics->Phonology->In-depth study
English Linguistics->Phonetics->In-depth study

This web site provides information for the Mouton Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology Project. This project presents introductory courses for phonetic and phonological topics with multimedia.

This project is formed by CD-ROM and students can purchase this and learn linguistic topics. Its purpose is to replace face-to-face teaching and to provide basic knowledge for both phonetics and phonology. First of all, in this web site, authors represent general information about the contents provided by the project. The Phonetics topics include auditory, acoustic, and articulatory phonetics. The Phonology module covers phonemes, distinctive features, optimality theory, etc. Moreover, this web site deals with three versions of demos, so visitors can experience the project. Since it also shows some screen shots of the program, visitors can directly explore the contents of the CD-ROM. In this web site, the publisher and the linguistic engineering team who completed this project are also introduced.

This project can be useful for many students who are interested in phonetics and phonology. However, the very basic, introductory knowledge provided by the project CD will not satisfy advanced students.

English Linguistics->Phonology->School or Organization

This is the official website of the Center for Spoken Language Understanding (CSLU) at Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. CSLU is an active research center that is commited to advanced spoken language technologies and to educate a workforce who can build and use speech technology.

This website offers a great deal of information about what CSLU is and does. Its current and past projects, publications, education programs, and much more can be found on the website. More importantly, the sites provide visitors with learning experiences related to language technologies. 'CSLU Toolkit' and 'Demos' are especially worth trying. For example, the spectrogram reading tutorial (http://speech.bme.ogi.edu/tutordemos/SpectrogramReading/spectrogram_reading.html) will definitely be useful for those who teach and learn how to read spectrograms.

This site is useful for phoneticians and phonologists and engineers particularly interested in speech technologies. Lecturers of phonetics classes will also find it useful.

Alan Prince Homepage

English Linguistics->Phonology->Scholar

This is the personal web site of Alan Prince, a professor of linguistics at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. The author's main focus is on phonology and optimality theory. This site provides the author's current classes, course descriptions and his research interests.

Alan Prince introduces not only his current works but also many articles and papers. This web site provides a lot of texts on the optimality theory. He also lets visitors download PDF or PPT files for his presentations at many linguistic conferences. This homepage mainly deals with his theses and seminar reports.

Although Alan Prince provides a lot of precious phonological resources, articles, and papers, the offered information can be difficult for beginners or students who have no interest in phonology. However, the author's contributions in linguistics are so outstanding and appreciable that students need to visit his homepage and read the provided articles.
