English Writing->English as a Foreign Language(EFL) English Writing->Business Writing
The Professional Writing Style website designed by Dr. Russel Hirst at the University of Tennesse, Knoxville provides a writing lecture program, which helps users learn how to write effectively in professional fields. The program offers twelve lessons and practice activities by which users apply what they learn to real writing. Users will have at their fingertips a set of lessons in professional writing style that gives them explanations, examples, exercises, and answers for the following topics: Preferring Active Voice, Denominalizing (turning verbs masquerading as nouns back into verbs), Trimming Fat, Reducing Jargon, Unraveling Adjective-Noun Strings, Reducing Preposition Sprawl, Using Parallel Form, Being Emphatic and Coherent, Using Modifiers, Choosing the Right Words, Mastering Punctuation, Using Ethical and Inoffensive Language, Finding the Right Tone. These units of instruction are deliberately ordered in the sequence shown above; they build upon one another, and sometimes a lesson will refer to an earlier lesson. Users of this website are free to work through these tutorials selectively, and in any order they choose. Users can learn business communication though this website based on their own strengths and weaknesses. The website lessons will strengthen users stylistic power no matter what their discipline, but the lessons will be particularly helpful to the users if they are students, or professionals, in engineering, science, business, or technical communication. These tutorials do not attempt to take users through every possible aspect of style, but the lessons focus on core topics: the most important stylistic guidelines for professional writing. The instructor of the website said that, ¡°I know that writing style is not everyone's favorite topic of study, so I've done my best to make these tutorials enjoyable and fast paced.¡± This web site is like a business book, and provides worksheets for practice, so users can learn professional writing through the web site.
