Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore

English Literature->SF/Fantasy/Horror

Following its establishment in 1923, the Edgar Allan Poe Society organized an annual series of public programs that included musical settings of Poe's poems, readings from his writings, exhibitions of information and memorabilia, and lectures about his life and works. Since then, its focus is to provide useful information on scholars and readers who wish to know more about Poe and his works.

This website contains much more than information on the society. Since 1998 they have been providing the full text of essays reaching back to the nineteenth century and also transcripts of lectures on Poe¡¯s works. It is hard to imagine a better place to start for online scholarly research.

One can easily notice the effort that was made to make every material on this website accurate and suitable for scholarly use. For Poe¡¯s poems and short stories, only the original sources have been used for texts on this website, retaining Poe¡¯s punctuation and spellings. Information on general topics regarding Poe¡¯s life and works are also offered along with their extensive collection of articles. Most of the written material on this site includes supporting documentation, with a bibliography.

The House of Usher

English Literature->SF/Fantasy/Horror

Despite its unsophisticated layout, The House of Usher provides a truly wide range of resources. A thorough look into the website will lead you to many of its entertaining treats that cover everything related to Poe¡¯s works.

Most impressive is its all-encompassing library that deals with interesting and significant materials and events influenced by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. These include recent audio works, bibliographies, societies, movies, musicals, comics, and theatre pieces. Everything is so broad in range that one can easily notice the widespread impact that Poe¡¯s literary world had on contemporary culture.

Although most of the material is provided in links, the scope of this site is truly unlimited. Its list of miscellanea may seem to lack focus and depth. However, it could be a great source of amusement for younger readers and it would be most suitable for any reader of Poe¡¯s works who wishes to start a basic online research.

The Literary Gothic: Bram Stoker

English Literature->SF/Fantasy/Horror

The Literary Gothic, set up by Jack G. Voller, a Professor of English at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, is a website dedicated to the works of over 200 Gothic writers and other supernaturalist literature written before the twentieth century. Its aim is to help and entertain students and fans alike of varying age, academic level and profession.

Compared to the information provided for other writers, the Bram Stoker page of this website contains a significant number of related links with brief but highly useful comments for each website. Links to electronic versions of Bram Stoker¡¯s works are also listed here, although one third of them are no longer accessible. The website also provides academic essays and reviews on Bram Stoker that may be of considerable help for students of literature. Very recently, this website has also added links to amazon.com for the convenience of readers who wish to order the featured books online.

Edgar Allan Poe - Poets.org

English Literature->SF/Fantasy/Horror

Poets.org is a widely-used, award-winning website of the Academy of American Poets. It is no wonder that their page on Edgar Allan Poe would be useful for students of literature. Thanks to its large preexisting pool of contextual information, the users of this website can easily place Poe within various historical or thematic contexts.

Its Further Reading section provides a critical essay and a brief introduction to Romanticism followed by a list of other Modernism poets of Poe¡¯s time. In this way, the reader can associate Poe with both Romanticism and Modernism. Most importantly, it also provides the full text of Poe¡¯s well known poems.

However, since the website¡¯s main focus is far from the study of Poe alone, it lacks volume and variety in the information they supply. Nevertheless, those who wish to study Poe as a part of larger literary movements may find this website useful.

A Poe Webliography: Edgar Allan Poe on the Internet

English Literature->SF/Fantasy/Horror

This website is very self-explanatory. As written on its front page, it is ¡°a critical guide to electronic resources for Poe research on the World Wide Web and CD-ROM, including electronic texts, HTML-encoded texts, hypertexts, secondary works, commentaries, and indexes.¡± This truly extensive site was first created in 1996 by Heyward Ehrlich, a professor of English at Rutgers University.

Its greatest advantage is its wide scope and its user interface that allows navigation to be extremely convenient. Although it does not contain any texts, it serves as a guideline to scholars who are in need of a tour through the existing online materials. In this sense, it not only shows Poe¡¯s vast popularity in the online community, but also the dawning of a new era in literary research.

The weak point of this webliography is that it lacks updating and that a lot of the links are no longer valid. Nevertheless, it can work as a useful starting point for those who intend on an in-depth online research.
