English Literature->Poetry->By period->20th century English Literature->Poetry->By period->Contemporary
This web site is a section from Literary History, a web catalog for literary criticism in nineteenth and twentieth century English and American literature. It introduces many poets¡ªmostly American and some British¡ª according to the literary trends or schools in chronological order. You can scroll down or click on a category. When you click on each poet, you can find a list of articles¡ªintroductions, critical essays, and other writings¡ªabout the poet and his works available on line. It is impressive that there are quite a number of articles linked and most of them are currently available. This bibliographical site seems to rely largely on Findarticles.com, a web site that contains a great number of academic articles. The site is edited and run by Donna J. Pridmore, who declares her purpose of this online project: "There are better articles available on the internet than you would know from a quick Google search." Indeed she kindly searched and arranged various useful materials from the internet into an organized bibliography. This is a very good source for studying American and British poetry in 19th-20th centuries, in that it not only provides links to other critical writings but also has categorized poets into the schools so that you can view them in light of the contextual trends. It is easy to explore, visually good-looking, and comprehensive in its coverage. Although it might not be able to replace library research and referring to books¡ªthis is the main idea that the editor of the site shares with many professors, it is still worth exploring for the quality information available online.

English Literature->Poetry->By period->20th century English Literature->Poetry->By period->Contemporary
This web site is created and maintained by Paul P. Reuben Ph.D., who is Professor Emeritus at California State University, Stanislaus. Prof. Reuben minutely introduces the homepage in his own words: "this is an ongoing project, first published as a book but now available only online; it is a research and reference tool, not a term paper factory." Fitting the name of "ongoing project," the site is very frequently updated. The last update was just a month ago. This online book is not only comprehensive but also easy to explore as it is neatly categorized in chapters and appendices. The ten chapters represent the major literary and historical perspectives, cycles, or movements in American literature; each chapter has an introduction, a selected bibliography, and a list of representative authors. The 22 appendices cover specialized topics in genre studies, writing assignments, research topics, and perspectives related to American studies. For poetry, chapters 7 and 10 are especially helpful. You can directly find a poet's page, either through the alphabetical list or by typing the name in search engine. This PAL site provides individual pages on over 430 American authors. Each page has a listing of primary works, a selected bibliography, links to relevant sites, brief introductions, brief biographies, and study questions. There is no doubt that this is a valuable research guide. Although you cannot view actual texts of literary works or critical essays, the site will teach you about the author and the context. Also, by providing a selected bibliography¡ªindeed carefully selected by Reuben, as you will find¡ª and links to other sources, this site informs you of what other material to refer to, and even how to cite those materials. Make sure to bookmark this site if you are interested in studying American Literature.

English Literature->Poetry->By period->20th century English Literature->Poetry->By period->Contemporary
The official homepage of The Poetry Foundation, publisher of Poetry magazine. The Poetry foundation¡ªestablished in 2003, evolving from the Modern Poetry Association founded in 1941¡ª is an independent literary organization and one of the largest literary foundations in the world. The site provides users with a comprehensive range of information about poets and poetry in English in general. It shows features from the magazine Poetry and articles and news related to poetry written by literary journalists every week. It also introduces published books and best sellers. The most valuable and helpful part of the site, however, is its archive section, which not only gives explanation on poetry tools and reading guides, but also contains more than 3,000 contemporary and classic poems in English by more than 250 poets. Furthermore, new works and articles are continually added to the archive. As the foundation says, you can think of it as an anthology—continually updated by editors, by critics, and by readers as they read and comment on what they find. The site might seem a little difficult to explore at first because a lot of menus that cover different sorts of information are against somewhat confusingly. But users will get used to the structure of the site sooner or later, and they can directly find whatever material they need by using the search engine. This is definitely a great source for everyone. It covers comprehensive contents, provides professional and in-depth knowledge, and is up-to-date.
