Shakespeare in Japan: Deguchi Norio

English Literature->Drama->Theater&Film
English Literature->Drama->By period->English renaissance(1500-1640)

This site is good to research how productions in Japan are like. "Shakespeare in Japan" is a project part of the larger product of "Shakespeare in Asia," which is supported by the Australia Research Council. This project is aimed to produce a performance description useful to both Japanese and non-Japanese users alike. This multimedia project is not made by only Japanese, but by a collaboration of the experts from Japanese and other English-speaking countries. The authors of this work are Ryuta Minami (Dept. English at Kobe City Univ.), Ian Carruthers (Dept. Theatre and Drama at La Trobe Univ.) and John Gillies (Dept. Theatre and Drama at La Trobe Univ.). Also, the members in this project, "Shakespeare in Japan," include Ian Carruthers (team leader and Japan coordinator), John Gillies (China coordinator), Dennis Bartholomeusz (India coordinator), and Harry Aveling (Indonesia coordinator).

In the front page of this site, there is a menu with seven categories.
-"Introduction" describes the project and its members. The contents above is from this category.
-"School version", "bar version" and "mask version", which are located in the left side out of the seven categories, are the main contents. The main play through the three categories is Shakspeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. In these sections, you can see the picture of the real production in Japan in three different versions, which are school, bar, and mask. "School" and "bar" indicate the background of each production and "mask (masks & stylizaion)" represents the style of the play. Each section can be connected to each other in the same scene. Below the description, there are links to the other versions. You can compare other versions directly with this function.
In each section, you can see the picture of the production with the original lines and very detailed description about it. The description explains the situation of the scene and even the lighting, dresses, and acting of the actor and actress.
-"Glossary" explains each meaningful word in detail. While browsing the scenes in the three sections, you can also get to this glossary directly by clicking the word.
-"Help" has an introduction to this site. If you feel confused in using this site, this section will help you.
-"Quit" is a kind of curtain call. With the message, "Thank you for using this presentation," this page introduces the authors and design team members of these works and gives more links for more information.

Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival

English Literature->Conferences
English Literature->Drama->Theater&Film
English Literature->Drama->By period->English renaissance(1500-1640)

This is the annual Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival homepage in HongKong. This idea was first suggested by Dr. Liu with many scholars who were contributing to enrich the network of friendship and cooperation among neighboring departments. Since the first festival was held in 2005, this festival has been held with hope of being an opportunity to combine Chinese and Western cultures and to encourage students' studies in English language and literature and their creative abilities by producting dramas.

This site gives some information about their past festivals, with schedules and flash-pictures. Of course, current festivals are treated more importantly. The section of "Current Festival" provides the schedule of events in a year for the first, and then, some information on their seminars, the festival application, and about advisors and adjudicators of this festival.

This site also provides seven links to other sites which are "Department of English (in Chinese Univ.)," "Office of Art Administrator (in Chinese Univ.)," "The Chinese University of Hong Kong," "Royal Shakespeare Company," "Shakespeare's Globe Theatre," "Bell Shakespeare Company," and "Great Books Index."

Overall, because of its design, which represents their idea of fusion between Eastern and Western cultures, this site gives a fresh impression and so it attracts users' interest more. It is updated whenever there are some events, and you can see its latest news on the front page easily.
