Shakespeare's World

English Literature->Drama->By period->English renaissance(1500-1640)
English Literature->Drama->Theater&Film

Shakespeare's World at Emory University is a collection of pictures and illustrations about or influenced by Shakespeare's work. This site consists of two separate sites, "Shakespeare and the Players" and "Shakespeare Illustrated".

"Shakespeare and the Players" provides a collection of postcards related to Shakespeare or his play productions. There are many photographs of actors and actresses and production scenes on these postcards, which become a valuable source for studying the history of Shakespeare theatre. They are many of the unknown and unfamiliar actors and actresses who played for the late Victorian and Edwardian audiences. You can look up these pictures by the actor's name or by the play. Also another interesting way is to find out which actors played in which role. All of these pictures have a description and specific dates.

"Shakespeare Illustrated" explores nineteenth-century paintings of Shakespeare's plays, or influenced by them. This site aims to explore how literature influenced art, and art influenced literature. Like "Shakespeare and the Players" this site is categorized in two sections: plays and artists. All of the paintings have an explanation of the work and the artist, and of course the specific date. This site is a work in progress so many more will be updated in the future.
Both of these sites have a search engine for the user's convenience.

General Resources->Cultural and Historical Contexts
English Literature->Literary History
English Literature->Drama->By period->English renaissance(1500-1640)

This cite is all about Elizabeth I. It provides interesting and educational information on the life and times of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603). Therefore, some of more complex issues of the Queen's reign may appear to have been superficially treated.
It contains information about Queen Elizabeth I including a brief biography, early years, marriage, wardrobe, pastime, portrait, government, the Spanish Armada, death, and her quotes. You can see lots of her portraits in her gallery, and this is also linked to The National Portrait Gallery. We also can learn she was a great fashion follower in her times, find the facts that she loved to horse ride, hawk, hunt (noticing the Elizabethans had no concept of animal cruelty), and participate in outdoor sports. She also loved music and literature, and you can also read two poems written by her.

This site is also offering information of phenomenon caused by the influence of Elizabethan I to her world such as Elizabethan women, all of the Queen's men, church, court life, Elizabethan Europe and so on. We can learn the England of her was a very structured place and had a rather complicated system of government. The influences of nobility and gentry were also very important. This provide the detailed information on the background of Reformation and Elizabethan Church and Catholics. It is worthwhile to consider she was a virgin queen in the times it was a patriarchal society, having very clear expectations of men and women. They also interestingly introduce men who had a relationship with her such as Robert Dudley.

This site also has many link sites that attempt to be a complete annotated guide to the resources on Elizabethan age such as complete works, study guide, Screen Queens, Novels of Elizabeth, Biographies of Elizabeth. In Screen Queens, you can enjoy the introduction on a number of films made on the life of the Virgin Queen including the first screen portrayal of her titled Queen Elizabeth and the latest Elizabeth.
