Arthurian Literature: Medieval

General Resources->Cultural and Historical Contexts
English Literature->Ballads/Myths

This web page is about Authurian literature and art from the Middle Ages, with a separate link to Arthurian motifs in the Romantic, Victorian, and Modern era. This web page provides links to other sources that are divided into topics such as "resources," "Courtly love," and so forth. Down below, there is a separate link related to the highly amusing medieval ballad ¡°The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle.¡± There is an e-text, a modern translation of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle, as well as a helpful introduction. Users can find a link to the encyclopedia definition of the ¡°Loathly Lady,¡± as well as a paper named ¡°Courtesy and Obedience: An Aspect of Middle English Gawain Romances¡± by Isamu Takahashi. This paper says that Ragnelle the inferior wants to gain sovereignty over Gawain, the most excellent, the most superior, knight of the round tale. In obeying her, Gawaine displays the great virtue of courtesy.

King Arthur: A Man for the Ages

English Literature->Ballads/Myths
English Literature->Poetry->By period->Medieval,Middle English(1066-1500)

This website provides information on King Arthur in historical, geographical, literary, and artistic perspectives. The overall design do not look very pretty, but the contents are good enough to have been voted "Best of the Web" by BBC in 2000. The website covers all the important Arthurian romancers from Chretien de Troyes to Sir Thomas Malory, as well as the post-medieval ones from Lord Tennyson to Marion Zimmer Bradley. The writings are easy enough for any young Arthurian reader or non-native speakers of English. Unfortunately, not all links in the website are active--I found a few did not lead me to the destined page.

This website contains loads of information that will help any beginners of Arthurian studies. The webmaster takes care to deliver both the historical and the mythical side of Arthur and his knights. While the information on knights are mostly from literary sources, there is ample pictures of historical sites as well. The emblems of Arthur's knights are given with brief but useful introductions on the adventures and nature of the knights. Another strong feature is the Question and Answer page, in which the webmaster responds to questions concerning Arthurian legends sent to him by users.
