Collect Britain: Putting History in Place

General Resources->Digital Repositories
General Resources->Libraries
General Resources->Cultural and Historical Contexts

Collect Britain, the British Library's "largest digitisation project to date" is financed by the Library and the New Opportunities Fund. It provides a large amount of information and resources; more specifically over 90,000 images and sounds from the UK and beyond are available on this site.

The site is largely divided into three category; Collection, Virtual Exhibitions and Themed Tours. In the Collection category, there are currently 18 collections available, such as “Britain uncovered” (Follow the unveiling of the country through hundreds of maps and views created between 800 and 1600). Here, you will read brief explanation of each map and enlarge it with one click to see a detailed view of it. Virtual Exhibitions and Themed Tours of the Collections are also available, such as "The Old East End" (drawings and eye-witness accounts of the growth of the East End of London); "Literary Landscapes" (examining how the rise of the English novel during the 18th century coincided with a growing pride in the landscape of Britain); "Lost Gardens" (illustrations from manuscripts and early printed books chart the history of gardening); and "On the Trig" (the trigonometrical survey of England and Wales in the late 18th century).

The idea of this site is very clear and its sitemap is well-organized so that you will not waste of your time clicking every page that you don’t need to visit. The site, however, shows you huge amount of resources which the National British Museum has been collected, so you may lose your way in this site if you do not have a specific question and keyword that you really want to find.

The James Joyce Scholar's Collection

General Resources->Digital Repositories
English Literature->Prose & Novel->By Period->20th Century

This website is a part of the University of Wisconsin Digital Collection. The selected works compiled in this site are several valuable books on Jame's works- such as Ulyssess, Dubliners, and Finnegans wake - currently out-of-print. It provides full texts of scholarly and critical data.

Both the individual works and the collection can be browsed and searched by keyword, but users are advised to consult the table of contents and indexes in the individual books in order to conduct a thorough search for specific information on the texts. Through "Browse the collection" menu, you can browse the contents either by book title or by author. The only drawback is that the downloading texts or data is troublesome. The contents can be only shown and saved page by page. Therefore, it is more suitable to browse or search some key words you are interested in first and refer to the selected pages, rather than viewing the whole book.
